Legally Required Label Information

Flower and vibrational essences are classified as foods (whether they are for ingestion or not) in the UK and are therefore subject to food production laws (Health & Hygiene) and labelling law (DEFRA  and FSA regulations) if they are being used and sold in the UK.

On the label of any essences (or any food product) that is for sale in the UK you legally have to have the following information :

  1. volume
  2. the ‘use by’ date and a batch number
  3. the name of the product – which must comply with MHRA Guidelines
  4. list of ingredients in descending order of volume (see below)
  5. any special storage conditions.
  6. your name (or business name), postal address and postcode and the country where it was bottled.
  7. instructions for use [unless label is less than 10 sq.cms – then this can be omitted]
  8. nutritional declaration where the potential labelling area is greater than 25 cm square – you can see more information about this here
  9. All of the information on your labels must have a font size that is the same height or bigger than 1.2mm ( determined by the letter ‘x’ )

For essences in particular…

If you use the words ‘spring water’ you have to say which spring, if you don’t have the testing information for the ‘spring water’ you use – then say ‘water’.

Any alcohol should now be stated by law in % Alcohol-By-Volume (ABV). See here for how to work it out.

The words ‘highly diluted extracts of the flowers’ or ‘infusion of’, followed by a list of plants , or ‘energy signatures of XXX’ for other types of essence, needs to be included in the list of ingredients.

Do not use ‘5x’ or something similar to describe dilution.

If your product contains any ingredients which may cause allergies or intolerances these must be stated in bold type.
