Our History & Regulatory Work

The Beginning

In 2000 it became clear that protecting the future of flower essence production in the UK required a dedicated organisation. While the British Flower and Vibrational Essences Association (BFVEA) continued its broader educational role, the British Association of Flower Essence Producers (BAFEP) was established on 28 September 2000 to represent producers and focus on production standards, labelling, advertising and regulatory matters.

One of BAFEP’s first priorities was to make guidance on production, labelling and advertising readily available to producers, helping members understand and comply with UK legislation.

Working with Government and Regulatory Bodies

Since its formation, BAFEP has worked closely with organisations including the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Trading Standards to improve understanding of flower essences and their place within UK legislation.

A significant milestone came in 2002 when BAFEP met with the MHRA to present the breadth and diversity of flower essence production within the UK. These discussions helped establish a clearer understanding of how essences are produced and highlighted the need for appropriate regulatory consideration.

Surveying UK Essence Producers

In 2003, BAFEP undertook a comprehensive survey of UK flower essence producers to better understand current production methods and demonstrate that flower essences form a distinct category.

The survey confirmed that the majority of producers continued to follow the principles established by Dr Edward Bach while also recognising the development of additional methods inspired by his original work. The findings supported BAFEP’s position that flower essences are neither herbal preparations nor homeopathic remedies, but represent a unique category that aligns most closely with foods or activated (living) water.

The survey continues today, with new BAFEP members completing the questionnaire as part of the Association’s ongoing commitment to maintaining standards.

Supporting Producers Through Regulatory Change

Over the years BAFEP has continued to represent producers through changing UK and European legislation, including discussions surrounding food classification, product claims, labelling requirements, exports and manufacturing standards.

Our work has helped provide practical guidance for producers while ensuring that smaller independent manufacturers can continue producing flower essences without unnecessary regulatory burdens.

As legislation evolves, BAFEP continues to monitor developments, provide guidance to members and work with the appropriate authorities to safeguard the future of flower and vibrational essences.

Looking Ahead

The regulatory landscape continues to change, and BAFEP remains committed to supporting producers with clear guidance, up-to-date information and practical resources. By working collaboratively with members and relevant organisations, we continue to protect the interests of flower essence producers while maintaining the high standards that underpin the Association.
